FEATHERSTON

GIRL' GUIDES MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Girl Guides’ Association was held in the Parish Hall on. Monday afternoon. Mrs Blundell presided over a good attendance of members from the Martinborough and Featherston districts. Mrs Blundell welcomed the visitors and also Miss Knight and Miss Herrick. Apologies for absence were received from 'Mesdames D. Cameron, R. W. Matthews and H. R. Bloxam. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mrs Blundell; secretary and treasurer, Miss M. Bloxam; executive, Mesdames Pope; Foss, Cole, Kershaw and W. B. Martin. .Mrs Riddiford, District Commis'sioner, read her report. Miss Herrick, Provincial Commissioner, spoke briefly on the Centennial Dominion Camp to be held on the Tauherenikau racecourse in 1940, and asked for the co-operation of parents and the Association- in connection therewith. Oversea visitors were to be invited and altogether it was estimated there would be between 500 to 600 in camp. Afternoon tea was served by the Featherston committee. Miss Knight (English Guider) gave a very interesting address on guiding in general. She referred to an island called Brownsea Island in the South of England where in 1908 a man on holiday collected 20 boys and men and ran a most successful group camp. This was was none other than Lord Baden P.owell, thus was scouting born. Miss Knight then- referred to a gathering many years later when some thousands of Scouts were at Crystal Palace, when girls dressed as boys and carrying sticks for poles appeared and declared themselves to be Girl Scouts. At first- all were against the idea but the girls persisted till they got their way and guiding was born. Miss Knight made useful suggestions to help Guides. Miss Card, on behalf of those present, thanked Miss Knight for her interesting address. ENJOYABLE FUNCTION. The committee of the Feath’erston Variety Entertainers held a social at the residence of Mrs Lowell to farewell Mrs Baker. Mr Harkness spoke of the good work Mrs Baker had done on the committee, and asked her to accept a small gift as a token of esteem. A pleasant time was spent playing cards. Supper brought the function to an end. PERSONAL. Mr'N.C.'C. Shepherd returned on Monday night' from his trip to the South Island. He travelled from Nelson to Wellington by air. EUCHRE TOURNAMENT. •- On Monday the Haunui Croquet Club held a euchre tournament at the home of Mrs Chas. Buck. The winners were; Miss Esma Card 1, Mrs Hankers 2. Afternoon tea was served and Miss Eva Card (president) thanked Mrs Buck for the use of her home.
