RELIEF IN SPAIN

THE RED CROSS APPEAL RESPONSE ONLY FROM BRITAIN. OTHER GOVERNMENTS URGED TO ASSIST. (British Official Wireless.) (Recd This Day, 10.5 a.m.) ' RUGBY, August 23. Contributions received to August 15 by the Internatidnal Red Cross Committee for relief work in Spain amounted to £18,500 of which £5OOO came from the British Government. Despite the discouraging nature of the response from ' other governments to the committee’s appeal, Britain has decided, in view of the valuable work which the committee is doing, to make a further contribution of £2500. It is hoped, that this may induce other governments to make a contribution but unless a further substantial amount is received by the committee from other governments, Britain will have regretfully to refuse to subscribe further.
