WOOL MARKET
SALE AT CHRISTCHURCH COMPETITION NOT VERY KEEN (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 23. As happened at the Auckland sale earlier this month, only about half the catalogue of 1800 bales was sold at the annual winter sale of wool oddments held in the land saleroom of Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., this afternoon. Most of the main buying points, except Japan, were represented, but competition was not very keen at any stage and the sale was over in an hour and a half. Prices were well below those at the last year. The catalogue comprised most ly crutchings but with a small selection of pieces. There was very little fleece wool and most of it was of indifferent quality. The quality of the crutchings was mixed. The chief result of Japan’s absence from the market was a slack inquiry for halfbreds, of which she is usually the main buyer. The offering of coarse wool crutchings was very small and the demand for them good. Best condition crossbred crutchings were in fair demand, but other qualities were absolutely neglected. Although prices were not high, fleece wools sold consistently well on the day. The unusually heavy number of passings was to a small extent due to growers having expected a slightly better market, but mainly to the condition of the wool offered. A good deal of it was of poor colour, dirty and stained, and for this there was practically no demand at all. Many of the lots were passed without a bid. The best price at the sale wqs 12Jd for an attractive lot of the seven bales of halfbred scoured pieces. The best price last year was 24i}d. Greasy halfbred fleece made up to lljd (21d last year), and merino made up to lid (19Jd last year). Halfbred crutchings made up to 9Jd (15$), and crossbred crutchings to 7:, ; d (15d).
