COURSING

WAIRARAPA CLUB AFFAIRS. PROFIT ON LAST MEETING. A profit of about £l5 resulted from the coursing meeting held on Saturday, according to the balance sheet presented at a meeting of the committee of the Wairarapa Coursing Club last night. The gate takings were exceptionally good and it was considered that the presence of The Clipper, the Waterloo Cup winner, was in part responsible for the large attendance. It was stated that during the last three meetings, in which eighty courses were decided, there were only five kills among the hares. The secretary, Mr L. Archer, was congratulated on having conducted another successful' meeting. His able management, it was stated, for some time past was largely responsible for the sound financial position of the club. It was decided to roof-in the greyhound pen on the ground and to increase the kennel accommodation, in anticipation of the club conducting bigger meetings in the future. The work is to be carried out by working bees this weekend. A visiting greyhound owner was fined 10s for having permitted a dog to get loose on the ground. The . committee took a serious view of the matter and decided that in the future, similar occurrences would be reported to the National Coursing Association with a view to disqualification. A sub-committee was set up to procure a tin hare plant and to issue debentures to cover the cost. About half the sum -required has already been promised. It was decided to call a public meeting of those interested at a later date.

SOCIAL EVENING. SEVERAL PRESENTATIONS MADE. Following the conclusion of Saturday’s coursing meeting a social gathering was held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall, at which the visitors were entertained. Dancing and musical items were enjoyed and supper was provided by a ladies’ committee. On behalf of the club, the president. Mr J. Bradbury, made several presentations. The work of the judge, Mr S. D. Geary, was favourably commented upon by local and visiting owners, who paid a tribute to the impartial mapner in which he had adjudicated during the past season. He was presented with a waterproof shooting jacket. Mrs M. Buick, on whose ground the coursing was held, received a cheque and Mr W. Buick, the slipper, a barometer. Mr P. Ryan presented a travelling rug to Mr T. McCord, a member of the committee, who is leaving the district. The patron, Mr A. Ross, presented the trophies won during the day to the winners, the Wing trophy to Mr Fred Butcher and the Yule trophy to Mr W. James on behalf of the owners. Messrs James and Taylor. Mrs L. Archer, wife of the secretary, and Mesdames J. Wing. S. D. Geary and Roy McEwen, members of the ladies’ committee, each received a piece of crockery in appreciation of their good work during the year. Messrs S. A. Thompson, secretary of the Napier Coursing Club and S. C. Drinkwater, of Dannevirke. replied to the toast of the visitors and eulogised the work of the club, stating that they had noticed a progressive improvement in the control of its coursing meetings.
