In the American doubles championships, first round, Hopman and Schwartz defeated Kamarath and Wetherell, 1/6, 6/3, 6/2, 8/6. Quist and Bromwich defeated Ballagh and Hughes, 6/2, 6/2, 6/2. Budge and Mako defeated Washman and Burgess, 6/3, 6/1, 6/3. In the best match of the day, Hopman and Schwartz displayed superior strategy, to beat Kamarath and Wetherell, but there were scarcely any rallies in the colourless match won by Quist and Bromwich. Budge and Mako were also without serious opposition. In the women’s doubles, Mrs Hopman and Miss Stevenson defeated Misses Bigler and Cumming, 6—o, g—1 ; Misses Winslow and Mrs Mcßea defeated Misses Stanton and Osborne 6 —2, 6 —l; Misses Stammers and Lumb defeated Misses Johnson and Ellis, 6—l. 6 —l; Misses Bundy and Workman defeated Miss Paynter and Mrs Morill, g—4, 6—4; M.M. Mathieu and Jedrezjowska defeated Miss and Mrs Seager, 6 —o, 6 —l. Men’s doubles: Hunt and Wood defeated van Horn and Parker, 6—3, g—2, 2—6, 3 —6, 9 —7; Allison and van Ryn defeated Kuramitsu and Mervyn Weston, 6—2, 6 —3, 6 —4; Gilbert Hunt and Sutter defeated Kovacs and Harman, 2 —6, 6 —l, 6 —3, 6—4. The Britishers,' Filby and Shayes were eliminated by Mulloy and Toley, 6—2, 3—6, 7—5, 3—6, 6—4 in one of the hardest fought matches of the day. It was anybody’s match throughout with the Americans’ slightly superior volleying deciding the victory. Kovacs and Harman are the only seeded team eliminated so far.
