JAPANESE OFFENSIVE
ATTEMPT TO SMASH LINE COVERING HANKOW SOME PROGRESS ON FRONT OF 40 MILES FLANK POSITIONS CAPTURED (Recd This Day, 10.5 a.m.) HANKOW, August 22. The Japanese have launched an offensive on a forty mile front, between the Yangtse River and Poyang in an effort,to smash the Chinese line obstructing the attack on Hankow. The Japanese captured positions on both flanks.
