GAOL FOR CURATE
For a theft committed on a Saturday a curate who preached two sermons next day was sentenced on Monday to six week’s imprisonment. He is the Rev Benjamin Beckworth, aged 38, curate at Christ Church, Leeds. The charge was that he stole a hat priced at 4s 9d. The stores supervisor said that Beckworth entered the shop on Saturday, took off a black “Trilby” hat and tried on several new ones. He folded up his own hat, placed it in his mackintosh pocket, put on the one he had selected and walked out. When he was stopped, he said: “That’s right. Let me pay for it.” It was stated that Beckworth had undergone two serious operations. His vicar said that the Bishop of Ripon must decide what action should be taken. He. personally, was willing to retain Beckworth. Parishioners say that the curate was so popular that he was considered as the probable successor to the vicar, who is to leave shortly.
