CARTERTON

WIN FOR HOCKEY TEAM. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Carterton senior team travelled ~ to Feilding on Saturday and played a game against Feilding! After a fast game Carterton won by 9 goals to 7. For Carterton goals were scored by S. Fisher (4), D. Jackson (2), A. Fisher (2) and V. Sayers (1). Great interest is being taken locally in the Kiwi v. Carterton match at Carterton on Saturday next. In the last game Kiwi won.. The Masterton team will be without the services of Massey on Saturday. SAVAGE CLUB KORERO. The members of the Carterton Savage Club scored a signal success with , their fortnightly Korero on Saturday evening., A special Returned Soldiers’ evening was held, about 60 ex-Service-men attending, a thoroughly enjoyable time being spent. There was also a very representative attendance of members of the club. Big Chief A. E. Hall welcomed the visitors, and installed as presiding chief fpr the function Savage C. C. Callender '(a returned soldier). Proceedings were opened by the Glee Club, with two spirited numbers, after which Savages W. G. Thomas and L. Darke played a pianoforte duet. Savage S. T. Rooney gave a recitation and Savages J. L. Harris, H. B. Keenan, J. L. Ewing, and P. L.'Darke sang a quartette, Savage Darke pre- , siding at the piano. At the Buttery Hatch adjournment, Savage D. L. Taverner proposed the health of the Returned Soldier visitors, referred to the success of the gathering and the pleasure it afforded the Savage Club members to welcome the visitors. Mr A. T. Murray, chairman of, the Carterton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, thanked the Savage Club for their hospitality. Mr Gibb Johnston, secretary of the local branch of the R.S.A., supplemented Mr Murray’s remarks. The wish was expressed by a number of members that the function be made an anual one. ■ The concluding part of the programme was an outstanding sketch played by the Rev. W. F. Stent (producer), Deputy Chief and E. H. Fisher,; assisted by Savages G. S. Bruce, J. L. Ewing, S. T. Rodney and D. Taylor. Various properties were installed for the occasion, the whole production being thrilling to the onlookers, who were prepared to vote it “the best yet.’.’ GOLF CLUB-CHAMPIONSHIPS

MISS BLANCHE BLATCHFORD. ; —— The death occurred on Saturday evening at her residence, High Street Carterton, of Miss Blanche Blatchford, third daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Walter Blatchford, of Carterton, and formerly well known settlers of Ponatahi. The late Miss Blatchford, who was held in high esteem for her many personal qualities, had been ailing for some years. She is survived by her brothers, Messrs Walter and Arthur Blatchford, Carterton, and Douglas Blatchford, Manaia, Masterton, and two sisters, Mrs James Snell, Park Road, Carterton, and Mrs Williams ' (Kaitoke). Mr Peter Blatchford, a brother, died some years ago. The funeral will leave the late residence tomorrow after a short service at 1.15 p.m. for the Clareville Cemetery. MR W. H. PINK. The sad news was received on Saturday in Carterton of the death of Mr William Herbert Pink, of Waikanae, which .occurred that afternoon' at the Palmerston North Hospital after a lingering illness. The late Mr Pink, who was well and favourably known in the Wairarapa, was born in Carterton and attended the Parkvale and Carterton schools over 40 years ago. He had been farming for some years. He was a brother of Mr Alf. Pink, of Carterton, Mr F. W. Pink (Levin); E. J. Pink (Ohau), Walter Pink (Wanganui), and A. H. Pink (Palmerston North). Mrs Purcell, of Palmerston North, is a sister. Mr Pink is also survived by his widow and two adult sons, Messrs Bert and Dudley Pink, of Waikanae. The funeral will take place at Levin tomorrow.

MRS P. H. EDWARDS. The death occurred suddenly at the homestead, Ponatahi, on Saturday afternoon of an esteemed resident of the district, Mrs Preston H. Edwards. The late Mrs Edwards, who is survived by her husband and a grown-up family of i.wo (Mr A. Edwards, find Miss Jean I Edwards), was the eldest daughter of the late Mr 'and Mrs George Swinn, some years ago well known settlers of the Parkvale district. Messrs Swinn brothers of Parkvale are brothers and there are several sisters. The late Mrs Edwards was known for her many charitable actions in the district, and her death at a comparatively early age, will be regretted by a wide circle of friends, and relations. Sincere sympathy will be felt for the bereaved family in their loss.
