RUGBY FOOTBALL

REDMOND CUP MATCHES. SURPRISE RESULTS. The first series of matches for the Redmond Cup was played in the Wairarapa on Saturday. Surprise results were the order of the day. At Memorial Park, Old Boys just got home from Red Stars, 5 —3, while Masterton caused an upset at Carterton, defeateding Carterton 19—15. Gladstone carried on the good work to beat Greytown B—7. Although most of the teams fielded a number of emergencies, play was fairly'bright and interesting. HAWKE’S BAY WIN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This’ Day. Playing Rugby up to the best interprovincial standard, the Hawke’s Bay and Wellington representatives provided a splendid display for more than 12,000 patrons at Athletic Park on Saturday. , Each side scored three tries, and each try was a brilliant one, but two conversions against a penalty goal gave the touring Hawke’s Bay team victory by one point, 13 —12.

The day was calm and sunny, and the surface only slightly treacherous. The great reputation which had preceded the Hawke’s Bay team was somewhat belied on the day, and the general opinion credited the team with only a bare chance of ilfting the Ranfurly Shield from Otago on August 31. Wellington took the field second fav-' ourites after the poor showings against Taranaki and Wairarapa. But a reconstructed pack of forwards not only held ■ the formidable-looking Hawke’s Bay eight, but had the edge on them throughout an extremely hard battle. The expected duel between the All Black hookers, Lambourn and Dalton, did not eventuate, as the latter was prevented by an attack of trench mouth from taking the field. R. Keeble, who substituted, was no match for the Wellington man. The visiting backs won the game for their side. Yet their best work was on defence, for with such a feast of the ball from set scrums, of which there many, the Wellington backs launched attack after attack. They met a solid defence, which yielded only occasionally to speed and determination. Thedefence of the home backs, by contrast, left room for improvement. Hawke’s Bay’s tries were scored, in order, by Reid, Le Quesne and Fox, and Bradley converted the first two. For Wellington, Crisp kicked a penalty goal, and Jones, Edwards and Wales scored tries, WAIRARAPA BEATEN. IN JUNIOR MATCH. WELLINGTON, This Day. In an entertaining game played as a curtain-raiser to the Hawke’s Bay-Wel-lington Rugby match Wellington juniors beat Wairarapa juniors by 21 points (7 tries) to nine (two tries and a penalty goal). The home side wa« superior both back and forward in the first spell, leading 5 —6, and looked like piling up a big score, but the visitors improved in the second spell. Meurk was the pick of the Wairarapa backs, and J. Alexander the best forward. Evans (2), Fitzgerald, Pocknail, Congreve, Greathead and Woods scored for Wellington, none of the tries being converted. For Wairarapa Meurk scored two tries and Forman kicked a penalty goal.

WIN FOR SOUTHLAND. - INVERCARGILL. August 20. Southland today beat South Canterbury by 20 points to nil. KING COUNTRY BEATEN. AUCKLAND, August 20. After being defeated by a strong King Country fifteen for two years in succession, Auckland took the honours by 33 points to 17 in a match today. COLLEGE RUGBY. GAMES AT CHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH, August 20. Glorious weather made for good football at Christ’s College this afternoon, when the first two games of the annual inter-college tournament were played. The matches are between the first fifteens of Wellington College, Nelson College, Wanganui Collegiate School and Christ’s College. At present Wellington hold the championship, having won it at Wellington last year. Nelson defeated Wanganui 27 to 6, and Christ’s College beat Wellington 28 to 6.

TOURNEY AT DANNEVIRKE. WAIRARAPA BEATEN. .l DANNEVIRKE, August 20. The third annual Rugby football tournament between Scots College, Wellington, Hutt Valley High School, Wairarapa College and Dannevirke High School began today. Hutt Valley High School beat Scots College 17 —3, and Dannevirke High School beat Wairarapa College 20 —11. In a brilliant game productive of secondary school football at its best, Dannevirke High School beat Wairarapa College. During the first spell Dannevirke held a slight advantage. From a scrum near Wairarapa line Paewai made an elusive run round the side to score. Naera missed. Dannevirke 3, Wairarapa 0. Following a forward rush Moore threw a long pass to Foley, who made a good 25-yard dash to hurl himself over in the corner. Dannevirke 6, Wairarapa 0. This was the half-time score. In the second spell Wairarapa went to the attack and kept Dannevirke defending solidly. A brilliant opening by Patrick saw Prior score. Brown converted. Wairarapa were now playing brilliant football and were always dangerous, but Paewai from close play sold three dummies and jinked through to send Lino racing for the line. Waera converted. Dannevirke 11, Wairarapa 5. Shortly after Moore snapped up a clearing kick to dive over. Dannevirke 14, Wairarapa 5. From a penalty outside the 25-yard mark Brown kicked a good goal, reducing the Dannevirke lead. Dannevirke replied with a penalty kicked by Naera. Wairarapa attacked, Prior threw to Stewart, who scored. Dannevirke 17, Wairarapa 11. Just on time Paewai dummied through again, passing to Lino, who scored, making the final score Dannevirke 20. Wairarapa 11. The two outstanding players were Paewai, half-back for Dannevirke, and Patrick, second five-eighths for Wairarapa.

On Monday Hutt Valley will meet Dannevirke and Scots College will meet Wairarapa.
