ATTEMPT ON SAFE
AT GLEN AFTON RAILWAY STATION THIEVES APPARENTLY DISTURBED (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 19. An attempt was made last night to blew open the safe at the Glen Afton railway station. A nearby general store belonging to Mr G. H. Edwards was also entered and £6 in cash stolen from the cash register. It is thought that whoever broke into the railway station was disturbed during the attempt, possibly by motor-cars passing through Glen Afton after their owners had attended a ball at Huntly earlier in the night. When the stationmaster arrived at the station today he discovered that one of the windows had been forced open and that papers inside had been disturbed. In the keyhole of the safe was an unexploded charge of gelignite. Apparently the intruder was frightened away from the station before he was able to ignite the charge. Nothing was taken from the station, and even if the safe had been blown open little of value would have been found. Entry to the store, which also serves as the post office, was apparently gained through the door. So far as is known none of the contents of the shop were taken.
To drive downhill in low gear is a somewhat unusual performance but it was the experience of a Nelson motorist during the heavy Weather recently. Gale force wiK> accompanied by a downpour of rain necessitated a wide open throttle in low gear before any progress could be made. The conditions during the storm were anything, but pleasant as the heavy weather brought down much loose rubbish and stones from the hillsides above the road.
