NEW ZEALANDERS RETAIN . TASMAN CUP MATCH KEENLY CONTESTED. MISSES HOWELL & HELEAN OUTSTANDING. By Telegraph —Press Association. Copyright. SYDNEY, August 19. The New Zealand women golfers retained the Tasman Cup by beating Australia today in the annual international match by four games to two. Results in order of ranking are as follows: — Foursomes. Mrs Fullerton-Smith and Miss Helean (New Zealand) beat Miss Kernot and Mrs Evans (Australia); one up. Mrs Clements and Mrs Hore (Australia) beat Miss Fleming and Miss Horwell (New Zealand), 3 and 1. Singles. Miss Kernot (Australia) beat Mrs Fullerton-Smith (New Zealand), 5 and 4. t Miss Helean (New Zealand) beat Miss Gardiner (Australia), 4 and 3. Miss Horjvell (New Zealand) beat Mrs Hore (Australia), 5 and 3. Miss Fleming (New Zealand) beat Mrs Clements (Australia) 4 and 3. In the first foursomes of the match play was very even to the thirteenth hole, where Australia took the lead, but Mrs Fullerton-Smith promptly squared the match with a 15ft uphill putt at the next hole. New Zealand won the match with a par four at the last hole. Miss Kernot was the outstanding player, but Mrs Evans gave poor support. In the other foursomes Mrs Hore’s putting was the winning factor, while Miss Fleming’s putting was weak. In the chief singles match Miss Kernot completely outplayed Mrs Fuller-ton-Smith, who was inclined to fluff her shots. Miss Kernot gave a masterly exhibition of bunker shots, every one cwhich she played to within 2ft of the flag. She also putted consistently, while Mrs Fullerton-Smith on several occasions took three from the edge of the green.
Playing Miss Gardiner, Miss Helean got extraordinary length from the tees and was rarely in trouble. Her approach putting left nothing to be desired. In all she gave her best performance in Australia. Miss Horwell played very attractive golf against Mrs Hore, hitting her tee and fairway shots with crispness and control. She was seldom off the line and her approaches invariably gave her putting chances. She found bunkers on only five occasions, but always got out well. Miss Fleming, after unsteady play at the first three holes, at which she sank long putts for halves, played in deadly fashion, winning five holes in a row to turn five up on Mrs Clements. Miss Fleming’s approach putting was extraordinarily good and on almost every green her second putt was under 2ft. Her tee shots were lengthy and accurate, resulting in very few visits to bunkers.
Mrs Guy Williams, non-playing captain, was extremely pleased with the outcome of the match. She declared that the two outstanding players were Miss Horwell and Miss Helean.
