STORE BALCONIES
NEW TAX IN CAPE TOWN. Cape Town is threatened with losing its store balconies as a result of a new tax introduced by the City Council. A Chamber of Commerce deputation, representaive of the biggest firms in Cape Town, urged the Council to abandon the tax. Business houses would be compelled to consider whether in future they would put up balconies to their stores, they said. It was pointed out that in Johannesburg there was no charge for balconies, while in Durban the charge was 2d per lineal foot and for signs affixed to the eaves a charge of 2s 6d per annum was levied. The charge for illuminated signs was 6d per square foot. In Cape Town, the basic charge for a balcony was 3d per square foot, the charge for signs was 2s per square foot, and where a proprietary article was advertised the charge was 5s per square foot.
