CONTEST IN AUSTRALIA FERRIER LEADS IN FIRST ROUND ADELAIDE, August, 18. Jim Ferrier, with a score of 71, led the field at the end of the first round of the Australian open golf championship at the Seaton course today. Ferrier was out in 37 and home in 34. His most serious rivals are N. Von Nida, 75, and G. Naismith, the defending champion, 76, and Fergus McMahon, a former champion, 78, a, nd H. L. Williams, Australian amateur champion, 80. Three professionals, J. Petterson, of Canberra, E. Anderson, of Queensland, and W. Robertson, of South Australia, had cards of 72. The second round of 18 holes will be played tomorrow and 36 holes will be played on Saturday, totalling 72 holes. After this the sixteen leading amateurs and the sixteen leading professionals comprise the field for the match play next week.
