HOUSEWIFE’S NOTEBOOK

If a lump of soda is dissolved in the blue water, it will prevent the blue from marking the clothes. If a cracked egg is rubbed with dripping before being put into the water, it will boil without bursting. To make old tinware look like new, sprinkle baking-powder on a moistened newspaper, and rub over the tin. Polish with a dry piece of paper. A little blue added to the water used for mixing sandshoe dressing will make the shoes snow white. If powder-puffs are washed in warm water to which a teaspoon of olive oil has been added they will become softer than when new, also improving the application of powder. Use your old wire electric-light shade in the following way. Remove silk and binding, and after painting any desired shade, cover with green net. Crochet a handle for the top, and you have a very useful food cover.
