GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild are busily preparing for the Caledonian ‘ Fair, which will be held on September 30, for the purpose of raising funds for the church. LOAN PROPOSAL DEFEATED. The Carterton Borough Council took a poll yesterday on a proposal to raise a loan to open and form a new street, to connect Pembroke Street and Broadway. It Was proposed to compensate the owners of the land for the area to be used for the road, to form the street in an up-to-date manner and connect all borough services. Very little interest was taken in the poll, only 226 ratepayers rec.ording their votes. The proposal was defeated, the voting being:— For ... 104 Against 120 Informal 2 A COLD SNAP. After a beautiful spring day yesterday the weather changed during the night, heavy rain falling. Today conditions are bitterly cold with a keen wind coming from the south. The change in the, meteorological conditions will not be appreciated by sheepfarmers owing to the lambing season being in full swing. MINIATURE RIFLES COMPETITION. HOCKEY. An interesting game of hockey should be witnessed at Masterton tomorrow between Carterton and Kiwi (Masterton) teams. The game will decide the championship honours. At present Kiwi are one point ahead and require a win or draw to hold the premiership. On the other hand, if Carterton win they will become champions. , - PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS. The first pedestrian crossing in the Wairarapa has been put down in Carterton, near the Post Office. At a recent Borough Council meeting this matter was discussed, principally in the interests of the safety of children attending the school in Holloway Street. The crossing was put down yesterday and it is hoped that pedestrians. old and* young, will use it and thus save risk of a motor accident. Residents should make themselves conversant with the rules to be observed now that the crossing is in existence, and save themselves from ths law by non-observance.
