DAVIS CUP

THE INTER-ZONE FINAL. i AUSTRALIANS WIN OPENING SINGLES. (Recd ’riite Day, 10.50 a.m.) . BROOKLINE (Massachusetts), August 18. Quist defeated Metaxa, 6/3, 6/2, 6/1. Bromwich defeated Henkel, 6/2, 6/3, 6/3. The first set of the match between Bromwich and Henkel can be summed up by stating that Bromwich’s play showed a. steady improvement, while Henkel’s continued to deteriorate. The Australian played the best tennis of the present American tour. Bromwich established a lead of 3/1 in the second set and then lapsed into errors. The German’s play, however, had in no way improved, and although he won his service in the seventh game, and broke through Bromwich’s in the eighth, it was only a temporary flurry. There was little to describe in the third set. Bromwich allowed Henkel only three points in the, first four games, and then fell into errors. He steadied, however, and had match point in the eighth game and twice in the tenth, before taking the set. Metaxa’s service was most effective in his match against Quist, and he contested all the rallies. Quist, however, could not be fooled by drop shots. He followed his first services to the net and was notably accurate. He rapidly ran out the set, 6/3. Quist was plainly at the top of his form in the second set. His ground strokes had length and vigour, his service was machine-like and he took the net at every opportunity. Metaxa was bad on the backhand, but his service was strong and he troubled Quist occasionally. The. Australian won the first four games in the third set before the German was able to stem the tide and win a game. Metaxa could not offer real opposition ad Quist romped home to victory.
