HINTS FOR THE AMATEUR.
VEGETABLES AND FLOWERS. WORK FOR THE WEEK VEGETABLE GARDEN. Plantings of Cabbage and Cauliflower can be made. Dig over vacant plots ready for cropping. Soiling crops should be dug some weeks before ground is needed. Prepare ground for Potato planting. A few sets can be planted as soon as ground is ready. Make'a sowing of early Peas, such as Blue Bantam and Greenfeast. Lettuce and .Radish can be sown. Select a well-manured soil. Sow Shorthorn Carrots. Plantings /of Onions should be made. Make sowing of Cabbage, Cauliflower and Brussels Sprouts. Prepare ground for a spring sowing of Onions. FLOWER GARDEN. Plant Pentstemons, Geums, Coreopsis and other herbaceous plants. Lobelias, Primula Malacoides, Pyretthrums and Violas can be planted. Give the rock garde.n a thorough overhaul. Make a sowing of Asters, Cornflowers, Godetias. Stir soil around Anemones and Ranunculi. Prepare ground for planting Gladioli. Chrysanthemum cuttings can be planted. Ground for Dahlias should be prepared as soon as possible. Rose planting and pruning should be pushed on. Vacancies in beds of\autumn planted annuals should be filled up. Dielphinium clumps should have: protection from slugs and snails. Chrysanthemum stools should be kept free of weeds. Fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, Roses, etc, .can now be planted. FRUIT GARDEN. Get pruning finished as soon as possible. Winter sprays must be applied at once, as the buds are already moving. Apply the first spray for leaf curl or Peaches as soon as bud seals begin to move. Use lime sulphur 1-10. Head back trees to be grafted over. Collect scions for grafts. Tie in bundles and store in a cool place. The nearer to freezing point the better, so as to keep them dormant.
