NATIONAL HEALTH

ATTITUDE OF DOMINION DOCTORS LONDON PAPER’S COMMENT REARGUARD ACTION BEING FOUGHT (Recd This Day, 11.50 a.m.) LONDON, August 11. The “News-Chronicle,” in a leader commenting on the New Zealand Social Security Bill, describes the doctor's attitude as another rearguard action against the idea of State medical service, and adds that the prospect of becoming part of a nation-wide service does not please them, but doubtless they wijl get used to it. British doctors originally refused to operate under the national health scheme, but soon found that their opposition was useless.

ANOTHER VIEW. EVILS OF STANDARDISATION. (Recd This Day, 12.55 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 16. The “Daily Telegraph,” in an editorial, says New Zealand is at present a land of bold Socialist experiment, but it is doubtful whether the attempt to socialise the medical service will prove to be popular. It adds that the standardisation of prospects would markedly affect the status of the profession and would also deny the patient satisfaction of the very human wish to command and enjoy a doctor’s direct personal interest. British experience is that many entitled to free treatment prefer to select their own doctor and pay for the privilege.
