BASKETBALL RULES

PLAY UNDER DIFFERENT SYSTEMS NEW ZEALAND TEAM LOSES AND WINS MELBOURNE, August 16. Playing under Australian rules, Victoria beat the New Zealand women’s basketball team 48-16 today. New Zealand were continuously penalised for footwork and the Victorian method of playing outside the court made it impossible to intercept their quick passing. The New Zealanders by contrast were slower in their movements than the Victorians. Miss M. Matangi was outstanding both in defence and forward. Miss E. Sinclair made good interceptions, but was penalised for footwork. Grass hampered the New Zealanders. Under their own rules New Zealand defeated Victoria 19-5. The New Zealanders were happier at their own game and gave a good exhibition, considering the grass courts. Prospects are good for the adoption of uniform rules as a result of today’s exhibition. The New Zealand team was: Misses M. Matangi, J.. Mitchell, E. Sinclair, M. Martin, M. Howe, E. Neame, E. Howard, J. Willson, J. Tyrell. Other basketball games today resulted: Tasmania beat Queensland, 2617; South Australia beat New South Wales, 45-10.
