WOMAN INJURED
EXPLOSION IN RANGE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Aug. 16. Like the bursting of a shrapnel shell, a coal range in the home of Mr and Mrs W. J. Palmer, 42 Venus Street, Invercargill, burst into pieces late last night. Heavy pieces of iron were thrown as'far as the back door, more trian 20 feet away, and several of the flying pieces struck Mrs Palmer, inflicting cuts and bruises on the back of her shoulders and legs. A heavy part of the ironwork of the
stove was thrown violently against the iron rack above, forcing the latter out of position. Another piece of iron ripped away portion of the tiling under the mantelpiece, narrowly missing Mrs Palmer’s head. A dent in the ceiling showed where another piece had been driven. The explosion occurred about five minutes after Mrs Palmer had put on a shovel of coal, and the terrific noise awoke many of the neighbours. The supper, which was prepared on a table nearby, was coated with ashes and dust.
