BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL. HOURS FOR READING ROOM. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, presided at the monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, held last night. Others present were: Councillors Trevor Beetham, J. Ninnes, G. W. Morice, A. T. Jackson, H. E. Gardner, R. Russell. G. D. Wilson, W. Kemp, W. H. Judd, A. D. Low and W. White. It was decided that in future the Reading Room be open on week days from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. instead of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. as previously. The services of a junior are also to be obtained to assist the librarian. An application by J. A. Brooks for a hairdresser’s licence was granted. In reply to an inquiry it was decided to inform the Masterton County Council that the Mayor intended calling. a district conference in connection with the Wellington centennial memorials at an early date. Mr Jordan said he had not called the conference because there was now a suggestion that the original provincial memorials should be replaced by one New Zealand memorial. Wellington favoured the national memorial and as soon as he received information as to the attitude of other provinces on the subject he would call the conference of local body representatives. The Director of Reserves, Wellington, is to be thanked for his gift to the Park of a quantity of achimines. A circular letter was received from the Institute of Horticulture urging the elimination of the common laurustinus on account of the ravages of thrips, in-

sects, etc. It was decided that the Park Custodian be instructed to cut out all the laurustinus in the Park affected with the blight and Councillor Gardner was instructed to wait on the sexton with a view to having eliminated all the laurustinus growing around the cemetery showing signs of being affected with thrips. Mr G. L. Scrivener was appointed games attendant at the Park on the same terms and conditions as last year. It was decided to sincerely thank a resident for her offer of four Muscovy ducks for the Park Lake and to advise her that as all the old Muscovy ducks from the Lake had been cleared out on account of their habits it was considered inadvisable to accept the offer. The sub-committee appointed to meet a deputation from the Lansdowne Croquet Club regarding croquet greens, reported that it had met the ladies on the site between the bridges and discussed the matter. No definite arrangements, however, had been made.

The Centennial Exhibition Company wrote thanking the council for agreeing to its allocation of £384 4s towards the cost of the Wellington Provincial Court.

On the recommendation of the Park and Halls Committee it was decided to write off a balance of £6 owing by the Masterton Horticultural Society for the use of the halls for shows. Councillors Gardner and Russell voted against the proposal in committee. The Wairarapa Coursing Club was given permission to erect a streamer across Queen Street this week advertising their approaching meeting. An application by the Salvation Army for the use of the Municipal Hall for the purpose of holding an Industries’ Fair was* referred to a sub-com-mittee for consideration.

The letter from the Army stated that it would be grateful for any rebate that could be made in the charges made for the use of the halls. 1 Councillor Gardner said he would favour giving the Army free use of the halls if the proceeds of the Fair were devoted to local charities, but not if they were sent to some foreign or outside missions.
