MOLE DRAINAGE

THURSDAY’S DEMONSTRATION. YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB EVENT. A field day of outstanding interest is being held by the Martinborough Young Farmers’ Club on Thursday at 1.30 p.m. on the property of Mr W. J. Martin, of Martinborpugh. As all who know the district are well aware, there are large areas of rolling clay country in the Wairarapa which respond in no uncertain manner to mole drainage. The usual system of moles drawn across tile drains has been quite effective, but where large areas are involved, this can become an expensive undertaking, costing from 30s' to £3 or more per acre. The largest cost is, of course, the tiles, so that any method which will reduce the length of tile drains required will be of interest to all who are contemplating drainage work.

Such a method has been evolved by Mr McLeod in the Manawatu. He has reduced the total cost per acre of mole and tile draining on his property to about 10s. This method has been closely studied by Mr C. J. Hamblyn, Fields Superintendent of the Department of Agriculture, Palmerston North, whose services as demonstrator have been secured for the Martinborough Club’s field day, so all who attend can expect to have the system thoroughly and efficiently explained in a manner that will enable them to adopt it to their own particular requirements.
