GERMANY’S MUSTER

MANOEUVRES INAUGURATED NO ACTIVITY NEAR CZECH. BORDER LABOUR & TRANSPORT DEMANDS CAUSING DIFFICULTY By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, at noon) LONDON. August 15. Herr Hitler and Marshal Goering initiated the army manoeuvres at Juterbog. The “Daily ■ Telegraph’s” Munich correspondent reports that there is no military concentration and no activity near the Czech border. The mobilisation of labour and the commandeering of transport for manoeuvres are causing embarrassment to many German firms. One lost 250, and another 150 workers. An official denial that further taxation is contemplated did not affect the Bourse market.

Juterbog is about fifty miles south of Berlin, and twice that distance from the Czechoslovakian frontier.

FRONTIER WATCH CZECHS ANXIOUS TO AVOID PROVOCATIONS. MANOEUVRES ON A SMALL SCALE. (Recd This Day at Noon.) PRAGUE, August 15. From observation posts, rigged in trees, and from open fields in which, disguised like farmers, members of a special Czech vigilance service, which, it is reported, has been newly created as a .result of the German military manoeuvres, are watching the border in order to report violations. The disguise, it is stated officially, is the result of a desire to avoid any action which can be construed as provocative. The Czech manoeuvres, although on a small scale, bring only two classes of reserves to the colours at present. It is estimated that not more than 300,000 to 400,000 soldiers and reservists are available.
