BASKETBALL

NEW ZEALAND TOURISTS IN QUEENSLAND STATE TEAM DEFEATED MELBOURNE, August 15. New Zealand beat Queensland, 13-9, in the first game of the Australian inter- State basketball contest. New Zealand’s good positional play attracted attention. The side was notable for sure handling and swift passing.’ The Australian footwork rules, however, were a great handicap, and the players were continually penalised. The score at half-time was: New Zealand 6, Queensland 5. In the second spell New Zealand improved, putting up a good defence, and interceptions by M. Matangi and J. Mitchell kept the Queensland score down. Windy conditions made accurate shooting difficult. The team included: M. Matangi, J. Mitchell, E. Sinclair, M. Martin, J. Willson, E. Neame, J. Tyrell. Victoria beat New South Wales, 38-8; South Australia beat Tasmania, 34-12. An exhibition match under New Zealand rules will be played on Tuesday.
