SOCIAL SECURITY BILL
DEBATE TO OPEN TONIGHT SESSION'WORKING PLANS. STATEMENT BY PREMIER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Consideration of the Social Security Bill, which was introduced in the House of Representatives on Friday, will begin tonight, when the second reading will be moved by the Minister of Finance, the Hon W. Nash. It is expected that the Minister’s speech will occupy a fairly long time, and it is probable that equally detailed treatment will be given to the measure by the Leader of/he Opposition, the Hon A. Hamilton, who will follow Mr Nash. A start will be made this afternoon upon consideration of the Estimates. The Prime Minister, the Rt Hon M. J. Savage, stated in an interview last evening that, with the exception of ’ tonight, the Social Security Bill would be taken only on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and that Tuesday and Friday sitting of the House would be occupied in consideration of the Estimates of departmental expenditure. This would remove any suggestion that the Bill was being rushed through and would give members ample opportunity to study its provisions. Mr Savage said he expected in a short time to be able to announce the actual date on which the House would adjourn, but there was nothing to suggest that the session would be extended beyond the period originally estimated.
