A PRACTICAL MANUAL

“DISEASES OF BREEDING EWES. Farmers who are alive to the wisdom of paying regard in good time to the appearance of disease in sheep, in order that flocks may be maintained in the healthiest possible condition, no doubt will welcome the appearance of “Diseases of Breeding Ewes,” by Allan Leslie, F.R.C.V.S. The book is the first of a series dealing authoritatively with the feeding, management and diseases of ewes and lambs. The author is Chief Veterinary Surgeon to the Federation of Co-operative Dairies, Eltham and was formerly Lecturer in Veterinary Science and Poultry Husbandry at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, and examiner in Physiology of Farm Animals and Dairy Husbandry to the of New Zealand. While the value of a book of this character necessarily depends vitally on the foundation of scientific knowledge on which it is based, Mr Leslie has written for the information and guidance of the practical farmer and student of agriculture and therefore as far as possible in simple and nontechnical language. The book deals comprehensively with the diseases and troubles to which breeding ewes are subject and many excellent diagrams illustrate and assist an understanding of the text. While comprehensive information is given regarding the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases, attention is directed also to the causes of disease. As Mr Leslie observes in a preface: “Prevention, rather than cure, is stressed because it is now well recognised that many sheep ailments are preventable without necessarily being curable.” Observing modestly that the book contains little beyond what every sheep farmer should know, Mr Leslie adds: "Where present knowledge is incomplete views have been expressed; those of the author do not necessarily agree with current opinion. They are based on experiments conducted by the author at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, New Zealand, and field experiments in Great Britain and Australia as well as in New Zealand.” “Diseases of Breeding Ewes” is published by Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs, Christchurch, at 9s 6d.
