ACCIDENT STATISTICS
INCREASE IN SOUTH AFRICA. Nearly 46,000 accidents took place in the Union of South Africa last year, according to statistics issued by the Director - of Census and Statistics in a special report dealing with motor vehicles for 1937. In the 45.947 accidents recorded, 1,046 people were killed and 15,710 people injured. 394 being Europeans arid 652 non-Europeans. There was an increase of 6,671 in the number of accidents over the previous year; 1,034 more people were injured and 31 more were killed.
Of the 80,101 vehicles involved 52,300 were motor cars, 3,181 were motor cycles, 8,363 buses and trucks, 11,655 pedal cycles, and 4,599 other vehicles, including 177 railway trains. Forty-three per cent of the accidents occurred in the Witwatersrand urban areas, 31.6 per cent in the other large urban areas, and 25.1 per cent in the remainder of the Union.
