MEMORIAL FOR HORSES

CELEBRATIONS IN SHANGHAI The first memorial services ever held for horses were recently celebrated in Nantao, a. suburb of Shanghai, in honour of the remains of 900 Japanese horses which perished during the fighting in China. Besides officers and soldiers, representatives of local Japanese organisations in Shanghai were present at the rites. Two live horses were brought to the ceremony to mourn • for their fallen comrades. Manes of the horses which had been killed were preserved, and will be returned to their former masters after the conclusion of hostilities. ' While this ceremony is described as the first of its kind, the Japanese are inclined to hold for animals’ ceremonies which in the West are reserved for human beings. A faithful dog named Hachiko, Which persisted in coming to a local railway station to meet its master after the latter had died, is commemorated in a statue outside the station. Memorial services for Hachiko were recently.held “in the presence of several of his descendants,” according to a recent Japanese newspaper report.
