BOOKMAKING CHARGE

SEQUEL TO POLICE RAID. FINES TOTAL £525. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, August 15. “The comment has been made in this court that the big bookmaker is never caught, but we have endeavoured to have the main ones in Palmerston North brought before your worship today,” said Detective-Sergeant A. B. Meiklejohn to’Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Palmerston North, this morning, when charges of bookmaking and of having kept common gaming-houses were heard against eight Palmerston North residents. Fines totalling £525 were imposed by the magistrate, who gave serious'Warnings to several defendants. One case was held over for a week. Fines for having kept a common gaming-house were imposed on the following:—Charles Joseph clerk, aged 35, £lOO and costs; Ernest James Watson, commission agent, aged 47, £lOO and costs; Alfred Dewar, commission agent, aged 53, £lOO and costs; Victor Hannah, salesman, aged 30, £75 and costs; James Sheldon Hanly, £5O and costs; Thomas William Bradley, confectioner, aged 45, £25 and costs; Walter Connor, bookseller, £25 and costs. For having carried on the business of a' bookmaker, William Irwin Black, gardener, aged 55 years, was fined £5O and costs.

Percy David Wootton, pleading guilty through counsel, Mr K. A. Williams, to a charge of bookmaking, was convicted and fined £lOO by Mr R. M. Watson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Feilding, this morning. A charge of having kept a common gam-ing-house in Follett Street, Marton, was withdrawn by the prosecutor, Sergeant Turner. A GREYMOUTH FINE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, August 15. In the Magistrate’s Court, William Paul O’Neill was fined £2O for having used premises at Runanga as a common gaming-house. FOUR MEN FINED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GISBORNE, August 15. As a sequel to raids on Saturday, nine men appeared before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., this morning charged with various offences under the Gaming Act. Five defendants were remanded and the remaining four were fined from £25 to £35.
