INDIANS DEFEATED. NARROW WIN FOR AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 13. Before a crowd of 6000 at Eden Park today, the Manavadar hockey team met its first defeat of the tour at the hands of Auckland by 5 goals to 4. Despite rain during the week and on Saturday morning, the ground, rolled out in good condition, and the game was played in sunshine. It was very closely contested, with Auckland just getting through. The winners played an inspired game, especially in the second spell, when they gained the lead. A terrific pace was maintained throughout and fortunes changed continually. At half-time Manavadjir were leading by 2 goals to 1, but in the second spell Auckland spurted to lead, 5 to 3. Desperate efforts by Manavadar could bring only one goal, but at the end the visitors were still on the attack. Superior in stickwork, the visitors found Auckland well versed in positional play and with an understanding equal to their own. Outstanding in the forwards was P. Fernandez, playing at inside-left, and M. Sultan Khan, centre-forward, was also very good. The centre-half, Shahnoor Khan, showed perfect stickwork. Hussain, with great speed, was the better of the full-backs. All the Auckland forwards were excellent, with Roughton and Rowe outstanding. The defence showed out very well, Clarke being the best back on the field. A very fine game was also played by the goalkeeper, Wattam. Scorers for Auckland were Roughton (3), Robertson and Rowe. For Manavadar, Sultan Khan (2), Ahmed Khan, and Shahabuddin scored.
