SHOULDER BEAUTY
EXERCISES ARE HELPFUL. IRON OUT RIGIDITY. Nowadays, there is so much of the back exposed that very few women can afford to neglect this part of the body. One only has to glance at the back and shoulders of any woman to guess her age fairly accurately. The reason for this is that after the first flush of youth the skin begins to sag and if it' is neglected it very soon will give away your age. Young shoulders will always prevent your growing old before your time—that is why shoulder beauty is so important. As the years encroach upon us, so does a certain rigidity set in in the shoulder muscles, and it is then that the shoulders give away our age. This rigidity can be “ironed out,” and the muscles loosened by carrying out a very simple exercise. This exercise will not only beautify your back, but at the same time it will improve your health, as it is a wellknown fact that a weak back and shoulders can give rise to many chest complaints. The first thing to do is to stand quite still, allowing the arms to hang loosely at the sides. Then raise the right shoulder towards the right ear, at the same time trying to hold the shoulders well back. Carry out the movement
very slowly so that no undue strain will be felt. Then relax. After repeating the movement six times, carry out the same exercise with the left shoulder. The loveliest evening gown, or bathing costume for that matter, loses its charm if the skin on the back is not as perfect as possible. Very often the pores are enlarged and unsightly, and there are sometimes whiteheads or blackheads, to say nothing of unsightly pimply eruptions. Soap and Oil Treatment. Most of these blemishes can be removed and the skin made fresh and young-looking by carrying out a simple home treatment. This treatment takes the form of a very thorough and Vigorous cleansing with a good medicated soap. Procure a back brush with firm but not exceptionally stiff 'bristles, and when you are ,in. your bath work up a good lather on the back with your medicated soap. Make the brush move in a circular direction, and then allow the lather to remain on the skin for at least five minutes. This vigorous brushing will stimulate the action of the blood, and will carry many impurities to the surface of the skin, and they will then be carried away with the soap and water.
After the soap has been on the skin for five -minutes it can be gently sponged away with warm water, after which the skin is patted dry with a soft towel, ancj a little oil is then applied. Pour some almond oil into a saucer, and with an old wooden spoon place the'oil upon the skin. This is not at all difficult. Tie a small piece of clean rag around the end of the spoon, and use the back of the spoon for applying the oil. If you massage and pat the skin with the back of the spoon much greater benefit will be received, as your skin likes to be handled roughly on occasion. Allow the oil to remain on the skin for a few minutes, then straight into your bath and wash it off. Soft Curves.
Very thin shoulders will always detract from your attractiveness, as well as adding years to your age. Very often the shoulders are so sharp, thin, and angular that even the collarbone is prominently displayed. When this is the case there is not the slightest need to be discouraged, as the following treatment will soon help you to fill out the hollows at the base of your neck.
First you will mix together equal quantities of olive and sweet almond oils. Allow this to stand for a few minutes whilst you sponge the skin with very hot water, after which it is dried lightly, and the nourishing oils are then applied to the skin. Massage it well in with the tips of the fingers, kneading and pinching gently so that the circulation is stimulated without the skin being bruised. Massage until your hands are tired, as not only will the oil feed and .nourish the skin, but the massaging will act as an exercise and will develop the chest and shoulder muscles. Therefore, this very simple treatment is really serving a twofold purpose. Carry out the above treatment until the shoulders and collarbone have reached what you think are satisfactory proportions, but do not expect any noticeable result for at least a month after commencing the treatment.
