FOOTROT GERM

ORGANISM NOW ISOLATED. EFFECTIVE CURE EXPECTED. As a result of research work which has been promoted by the Australian Wool Board, considerable progress has recently been made in the study of the causative germ of foot-rot, a disease which sheep farmers have suffered among their stock for the last 50 years without much being done by veterinary authorities to find effective methods of control. An organism has now been isolated which appears to be the true agent of the disease, as it is capable of causing foot-rot under artificial conditions. It is stated that with the causative germ now fairly certain, and isolated so that its reactions to various treatments may be observed, the discovery of an effective cure, or preventive, is fairly certain. Meantime extensive field trials for the control of the trouble have been instituted and are giving promising results, though no conclusions can yet be published.
