FEARS BASELESS
FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE. A species of blue tongue among native cattle in the Dundee (Natal) area has given rise to the rumour that foot-and-mouth disease has broken out in Natal. Dr P. R. Viljoen, Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry, declared that it had been definitely established that the outbreak was not foot-and-mouth disease. Dr G. van der Wai de Kok, Deputy Director of Veterinary Services, returned to Pretoria from the Dundee area and it was learned that he is satisfied that no foot-and-mouth disease exists in the area. Last year an occurrence very similar to the Dundee outbreak was reported from Basutoland. Cattle developed sores in their mouths and foot-and-mouth disease was suspected, but the authorities came to the conclusion that the outbreak was merely a form of blue tongue, more usually found in sheep. ,
