BASKETBALL
QUADRANGULAR 'TOURNAMENT. SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ CONTEST. The first annual quadrangular basketball tournament for secondary school players was commenced on the Wairarapa College courts yesterday afternoon, when some fine, quick play was witnessed. The first match was between Wellington East Girls’ College and Dannevirke High School and resulted in a win for the former by 20 to 13 after a very closely contested game. The Wellington team played a good positional game, and the passing, particularly in the forward third was quick and accurate. In this third B. Cattin was very quick to pass on the ball and her interceptions were good. There was more spectacular play in this third during the second half of the game, as the Dannevirke defenders lost control. The game was not on the whole a fast one, as both teams particularly in the first half, adopted high passes, which waste time and can more easily be intercepted. The Wellington centres were strong and quick, especially P. Sinnett, whose speed and accuracy were of immense use to her team. She and her opponent, M. Lawton, were well matched and fought hard for the ball. During the second half of the game Dannevirke were outclassed. They are a team of junior; players, not nearly so experienced as the Wellington girls and are to be commended for their plucky game. The second match, between Wairarapa College and Hutt Valley High School, resulted in a win for the former by 20 to 7, after a fast and interesting game. The Hutt girls are quick on the ball and particularly good with tie balls. One of the finest players on the field was the Hutt captain, Nola Huse, who intercepted excellently. Wairarapa College played well in position, particularly in the second half. The Wairarapa defence was not as good as usual, though M. Carroll played an outstanding game. In the centre, M. McLaren (Wairarapa) intercepted well and passed on accurately and quickly. For Wairarapa Pat Baskiville shot some brilliant goals and played an excellent and most active game. Opposed to her was Joan Campbell, a player of a similar type, who fought well for the ball. A junior player in the Wairarapa forwards, Irene Shoosmith, displayed very promising form and hardly ever missed her shots. Hutt Valley were unfortunate in losing the services of Doris Crofts early in the game, this player retiring with an injured ankle. One of the most useful Hutt forwards was Norrice Taylor. The referees for the afternoon were Misses R. Edwards and D. O’Donnell. The visitors and the local team were later entertained at afternoon tea in the home science building, the arrangements being in the hands of Miss A. J. Shelton. The Wairarapa captain, Pat Baskiville, welcomed the guests in a short speech, and the principal, Mr G. G. Hancox, explained the arrangements for their entertainment and for today’s matches.
FINAL GAMES. WIN FOR WAIRARAPA. The final games in the tournament were played this morning. Wairarapa College won the contest by defeating Wellington East Girls’ College after an excellent display of basketball by both teams. The play throughout was most exciting. From just before the end of the first half the Wairarapa girls asserted themselves, a position they maintained until the conclusion of the game. Their win was due largely to their excellent passing, fine positional. play and strong determination. The outstanding players for Wairarapa were M. Carroll, P. Baskiville and M. McLaren. Yesterday’s losers, Hutt Valley High School and Dannevirke High School, also played this morning, Hutt Valley winning by 18 to 10 in a scrappy game. Dannevirke had plenty of opportunities but their shooting was poor. The visiting girls were entertained at morning tea. The Dannevirke team left by train this morning and the Hutt girls returned home this afternoon.
