CRICKET AT THE OVAL
SURREY V. AUSTRALIA BARNETT IN EXCELLENT FORM. FLEETWOOD-SMITH AMUSES THE CROWD. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 9.20 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 12. The cricket match between Australia and Surrey was resumed at the Oval in sunny weather. The wicket still was soft. Waite made a feeble stroke and was caught at mid-on. Barnes, who was batting attractively, was run out, this being due to a .misunderstanding with Barnett, who
hesitated in the middle of the pitch. Barnes hit five 4’s. Barnett, in his first appearance since the Leeds Test, was in excellent form. He and White put on 28 before White was bowled. McCormick spooned up a catch to the covers. O’Reilly hit and mis-hit with equal confidence. Fleetwood-Smith’s antics kept a small crowd amused till the innings ended after 280 minutes play. O’REILLY BOWLS WELL. After Fishlock and Gregory had scored sixteen O’Reilly was brought on. He dismissed Fishlock, Gregory, and Barling in successive overs without a run being scored from him. It was not until O’Reilly’s sixth over that a single was scored off his bowling. The professional Parker was . the only batsman who knew how to play the spinners. Play was abandoned at 4.35 p.m. owing to the rain and the match was drawn. The scores were as follow: — AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
