Earlier Publication of Statistics.
The publication of the monthly Abstract of Statistics more than a week earlier this month than last month was the subject of favourable comment by the secretary of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce (Mr J. Roy Smith). He said that the number of inquiries received by the chamber which necessitated reference to the Abstract was surprising, and early publication was of great advantage.’ Last month the June issue had arrived on July 18, but this month the July issue arrived on August 10. The chamber had recently written to the Minister of Finance (the Hon W. Nash) asking if earlier publication could be arranged, and the Minister had replied stating that every opportunity which might advance publication was taken. Mr Smith said that early publication was very important, as the figures lost their value when they became stale. Fate of Ship Cabaret. Abandoned by the owners to the Auckland Harbour Board, the Showboat ship cabaret will soon end its career. It may be broken, but, as this presents difficulties, it is likely that it will be towed to sea and burned. The cabaret fittings have been sold by the board, and demolition work is now in hand. The Showboat was originally the Columbia, ’ a four-masted American schooner, and was used in the Honolulu trade. When the vessel visited Napier some years ago the Devonport Steam Ferry Company purchased it and brought it to Auckland, where the fittings were sold at auction. For a number of years after that she was used as a coal hulk and was moored in the harbour. It was converted into a cabaret in December, 1935, but sank at her moorings on several occasions. On the final occasion it was refloated, but was not again used.
