TRUST RATES

REMISSION OF OPERA HOUSE DESIRED DEPUTATION TO WAIT ON BOROUGH COUNCIL The rates payable directly by the Trust Lands Trust, after allowing for discount and including the Technical School building, total £7BO. A last night’s meeting of the Trust it was decided to make payment before discount day. It was agreed that a deputation should wait on the Masterton Borough Council at its next meeting, and ask for a remission of the rates on the Opera House, which amount to £44.

Maintaining that the Trust should make application to the borough council for a remission of the rates of the Opera House, the chairman, Mr H. P. Hugo said the Opera House was really a community affair, and the ratepayers should take their share of the liability. Mr R. Krahagen agreed, pointing out that the total amount received by the borough in rates from all Trust properties was between £2OOO and £3OOO. This sum included the rates paid directly by the Trust, and those paid by lessees.

Mr J. Macfarlane Laing said the financial position of the Opera House would definitely entitle the Trust to a claim for a remission of the rates. This year, unfortunately, a very substantial loss would be shown in the running of the Opera House. Messrs E. G. Eton, A. O. Jones, R. Krahagen and the secretary, Mr W. P. Yates were appointed a deputation to wait on the borough council.
