He is to attend a conference of Australian vice-chancellors, at which Nuffield scholarships will be discussed. At today’s meeting of the Featherston County Council a motion of condolence was passed with the relatives of the late Mr C. F. McAllum, who was County Clerk for a period of 11 years. The chairman, Mr A. B. Martin, and Councillor Q. Donald paid tributes to the services Mr McAllum had given to the council. At Dunedin the death took place at the age of 91 years of Mr John Ogg, who was well known some 60 years ago as an outstanding competitor at Caledonian sports and later as an official of the Caledonian Society of Otago. On many occasions in Scotland he filled second place to the famous athlete Donald Dinnie. He was also widely known in bowling circles. A few days after celecrating his 101st birthday, Mr George’ Enos Holloway has died at Morrinsville. Mr Holloway understood that he was the oldest living veteran of the Maori wars and the last of the 40th Regiment which took part in the campaign in Taranaki in 1860, and in the Waikato in 1863-64. Born in Devon, Mr Holloway came to New Zealand at an early age. Twelve days ago, when he celebrated his birthday, he appeared in excellent health for a man of his age.
The death has occurred at Dunedin of Mr Leslie'Leven Kirkcaldy, who, in his day, was both a prominent footbal player and oarsman. Mr Kirkcaldy was born in 1872 at Mornington, and, on completing his education at Otago Boys’ High School, joined his father in the Provident Life Assurance Office and later joined the National Mutto.l Life Association. He lived in Dunedin for the greater part of his life, but was in Wellington for a year or two as a young man and during his sojourn there he played for the Wellington Football Club and was also a member of the Star Boating Club. In 1892 Mr Kirkcaldy linked up with the Otago Rowing Club.
