WOMEN FARMERS

OVER FIVE THOUSAND IN ENGLAND. It surprises many people to find how many of our women have mastered the principles of agriculture sufficiently to be called “farmers” (writes a London correspondent). Dairying along the south coastal counties is a favourite job, and one of the best women dairy farmers is Frances, Countess of Warwick, who specialises in Jerseys and Highland cattle. In Norfolk is Mrs Bett, who is one of the few folk in England still growing flax, and meeting the competition from the foreign article. Miss Noreen Pennant Lloyd has a, herd of Dexter cattle at her Suffolk farm, and is most successful in local shows. Some women experiment, their avowed intention being to produce food of a quality superior to any at present on the markets of the world; in fact, to restore Britain’s pre-emin-ence as an agricultural country. Foremost of these are Miss Heap, of The Lilies, Aylesbury, and the Hon Mrs Dallas Waters, who farms in Cheshire. Altogether over 5000 women are farming in England on their own account.
