THE LAWN

IS IT PATCHY? Every gardener has experienced the

annoyance of finding bare and unsightly patches on the lawn. This usually happens in summer when the lawn is required to be looking its best. It is hot easy to replace with seed at that time. It is therefore a good plan to have some reserve grass for emergency patching. Take as many seed boxes as you think may be needed, fill them three-quarters full of good loam with a little sand added. Water well, and after the compost has drained and has been made firm, sow grass seeds thickly and evenly over the surface. Cover with-Jin of soil and water again. So long as sufficient moisture is given, the boxes can be left in some out-of-the-way part of the garden. When the grass is 2in high cut it with scissors. It is a simple matter to replace bare spots with turf from' the boxes.
