The Chinese, advancing along the north bank of the Yangtse, are hammering at the gates of Hwangmei and Taiha. They recaptured a hill overlooking Kiukiang and repulsed a Japanese landing 30 miles from Kiukiang. BOMBS ON CANTON. MANY REFUGEES KILLED. HONG KONG, Aug. 9. Twenty Japanese aeroplanes bombed Canton this morning. The attack was directed against the power station and the residential district of Saikuan, which had not previously been bombed, and was filled with refugees. The casualties, therefore, were heavy. Leaflets were dropped threatening to bomb the city for 10 consecutive days. THIRD FIERCE RAID. (Recd This Day, 9.20 a.m.) CANTON, Aug. 9. One hundred and two persons were killed and 159 injured in a third fierce air bombing since dawn. DEFENCE OF HANKOW. EVACUATION OF CIVILIANS ORDERED. (Recd This Day, 10.15 a.m.) HANKOW, Aug. 9. Marshal Chiang Kai Shek has ordered the evacuation of half a million civilians before August 15. The first 300,000 have moved out. /■ ■
