ESPERANTO
MASTERTON CLUB MEETING The weekly meeting of the Masterton Club was held last evening in the club room, Municipal Buildings, Mr A. Dewar, D.8.E.A., presiding. The secretary, Mr W. H. King, presented the greetings of the well-known Esperantist pioneer and benefactor, Mr W. L. Edmanson, J.P., of Wellington. The usual weekly tuition, which comprised conversational practice and study of the finer points of Esperanto grammar, followed. In a brief talk on the Esperanto vowels, the president demonstrated the true sounds —similar to those contained in the Continental languages—and gave some useful hints to aid the memory. The secretary outlined the progress made in the production of Esperanto gramophone records, some of which have been in use during some years by New Zealand Esperantists. The concluding item was a reading by Miss M.' J. Ross, 8.A., of an article entitled “Esperanto kaj Filmoj,” dealing with the problem confronting the film industry in connection with the successful production of films for universal exhibition, the work and expense of which have increased substantially since the advent of the talking films. The first Esperanto talkie was produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1930, and the most recent has lately been produced in Paris during the international conference of “Esperanto in Modern Life,” and is being shown in the schools of France.
