“THE CINGALEE”

On Saturday night in the Opera House the Masterton Amateurs will present "The Cingalee,” which will be staged until the following Saturday. This is the first time that this musical comedy has been staged in Masterton. Many people have little knowledge of its excellent music, libretto and humour. The Amateurs should be able to demonstrate the merits of the piece and add further laurels to their long line of successful productions in their 1938 season. The story is set in Ceylon, principally on the Hon Harry Vereker’s tea plantation. He intends to marry one of his tea girls (a girl half English and of high caste), but this does not suit Harry’s English relations. They arrive from England and the plot goes on. Boobamba had been married in native fashion to this tea girl, Nanoya, and as she is now grown up he wishes to complete his marriage legally. What happens when Chambuddy Ram (a Baboo lawyer) and others outwit Boombamba makes a good plot full of amusing episodes. Lady Pat, Vereker’s sister (Mrs Dingle) is new to Masterton but will be found a real artist in singing and stage craft. The society should have a good season with so fine an opera to present to patrons. The box plan is at Arts and Crafts and is being well filled.
