MASTERTON COUNTY

FINANCE COMMITTEE MEETING TAUERU ROAD CONSTRUCTION APPROVED. At a meeting of the Finance Committee of the Masterton County Council, held this morning, the treasurer reported a debit balance at the Bank of New Zealand of £9667 4s 6d. The receipts since -the last meeting totalled £3718 6s lid, £1917 19s lid of that sum representing Government subsidies. The total of Government subsidies outstanding was £2388 14s 4d. Riding balances, all credit, were reported as follow: —Opaki, £1460 7s; Rangitumau, £BlO 3s 3d; Upper Taueru, £557 10s sd; Te Whiti, £279 18s 2d; Uriti, £262 14s 7d; Wainuioru, £404 13s 7d. Accounts totalling £5769 13s 2d were recommended for payment. Included in that sum were £1273 10s, the second instalment of the levy due to the Wairarapa Hospital Board and £540 6s 4d interest on special loans. The Main Highways Board advised that proposals for the reconstruction of the Bennett’s Hill to Taueru deviation section of the Masterton-Castle-point Highway had been approved and the work could be put in hand by the council’s staff. The proposals for the Taueru deviation were approved some time ago. The consulting engineers advised that proposals for sealing the Master-ton-Castlepoint Main Highway north of the Taueru Bridge for a distance of about one mile would be submitted to the Main Highways Board for its approval at an early date. It was decided to accede to the request of Mr J. Ames, in view of the bad weather, to postpone the earthwork at the Homewood Road deviation at 36 miles until the weather was more favourable. The County Clerk, Mr J. C. D. Mackley, reported that proposals in connection with the Upper Manaia Road legalisation had been completed and were being forwarded to the authorities in Wellington to enable appropriate action to be taken. The council decided to pay half of its contribution towards the Wellington Provincial Court at the forthcoming Centennial Exhibition. •'
