COUNTY AFFAIRS

MEETING OF MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL USE OF MOTOR TAXATION The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday there being present Councillors E. W. Cheetham (in the chair), D. Bennett, C. Welch and A. Gray. Leave of absence was granted to Councillors R. Judd and A. Forsberg. The treasurer reported a debit balance of £1166 8s Bd. Accounts totalling £675 5s 8d were passed for payment. A settler requested that attention should be given to a certain right-of-way, and the Clerk (Mr A. W. S. Boilings) was directed to reply that this would be attended to as soon as possible. The , secretary of the Centennial Exhibition Committee advised that the allocation for this county towards the expenses of the exhibition amounted to £29 Bs, and it was decided to accept this allocation. The State Forest Service advised that the sum of £9 14s 3d was due to the council in respect of fifths, and it was decided that this sum should be expended towards the maintenance of West Riding roads as hitherto. The Masterton County Council asked whether the council considered that the joint by-laws should be amended by incorporating a by-law prepared by the solicitor to the New Zealand Counties Association in respect of crossings over drains and water courses. It was decided to hold the matter over until a copy of the proposed by-law was available. The Clerk reported on what had been done in connection with McKenzie’s Bridge, and submitted site plans supplied by the county engineer for the information of the council. The Clerk was directed to take the necessary steps to obtain the sanction of the Local Bodies’ Loans’ Board to the raising of the requisite loan for the construction of this bridge. The Canterbury Progress League submitted a copy of a resolution passed by the league urging that , all motor taxation should be transferred to the Main Highways Account, and expended for highway purposes. It was decided to support this proposal. The overseer reported satisfactory progress on all work during the past month, and prospective work was discussed and arranged for.
