BURKE’S MAXIMS
* REVENUE FROM ECONOMY. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir John Simon, quoted Burke on the impossibility of giving pleasure by taxation. I would quote another of Burke’s maxims (derived from Cicero), that a great revenue may be drawn from economy, writes Mr Francis W. Hirst, the economist, in comment on the British Budget. When all the spending departments are spending more and more there is invariably much extravagance and waste. In such times the Treasury’s pruning knife can be applied all round, not only without detriment to the services but probably with advantage to efficiency.
