STOCKHOLM, August 7. The death has occurred of the film star Warner Oland, well known as. Charlie Chan.
Warner Oland, who ’ became famous by playing the role of Charlie Chan, the genial Chinese detective, in pictures based on the Earl Derr Biggers books, was born in Umea, Sweden, and his full name was Johann Warner Oland. He went to the United States at the age of 13 and settled in Boston. He was educated at Boston High School and at Curry’s Dramatic School, where he studied singing. For the next 14 years he worked on the stage, and at intervals made movies. His first screen role was in support of Theda Bara in “Jewels of the Madonna.” Following a number of further screen experiences, nearly always as a villain, he began the Charlie Qhan pictures, which were so successful that Fox Films finally bought the right to weave their own stories around the detective.
