General situation: A very deep depression with a considerable northward extension is now passing over the South Island. It is likely to be followed by one or more secondaries. Pressure is rising rapidly over eastern Australia. Forecast: Strong and squally, ■ northerly to north-westerly winds, reaching gale force in many places and strong gale in some exposed positions. Weather cloudy to overcast with rain probable; temperatures rather mild.
