MEETING OF MASTERTON LEAGUE. ACTIVITIES OF PAST MONTH. The monthly meeting of the Women's National Welfare League was held yesterday at the Midland Hotel. Those present were: Miss Kummer (in the chair), Mesdames H. E. Pither, J. Caselberg, S. Coradine, R. C. Drummond, G. H. Collie, E. Hodder, A. Charleson, A. W. McKenzie, E. J. Coleman, H. P. Glen, F. Garland, H. P. Harrison, S. J. Munn, G. McCracken, S. Fletcher, J. B. Carruthers, E. Burke, T. F. Watson, F. Daniell, R. Whyborn, J. C. Forsyth, G. L. Thomas, A. E. Kilgour, Misses C. Cameron, Beiliss, Boddington, Mesdames G. G. Tolhurst and Prescott.

Apologies were received from Mesdames T. Jordan, H. Brisco, W. Judd, J. Robertson and W. McKenzie. A letter was received from the Hospital Board advising the League that the Director of Education could not appoint an instructor in handicrafts for duty at the Masterton Hospital. A letter of thanks was received from Miss McLaren for sympathy in the death of her brother.

An invitation was received from the Manaia-Solway Institute for two members of the league to attend the fourth birthday celebration. Mesdames Tolhurst and Kilgour were appointed to attend. A letter from the Crippled Children’s Society announced that Miss Brockett had kindly volunteered to take up the teaching of handcraft for the children in the Public Hospital and the society would co-operate in any arrangements for this work. Mrs Tolhurst reported that two visits were paid to the public hospital during July. Teas were provided for the T.B. patients and flowers, biscuits and reading matter were distributed. Visitors for August 9 and 23 are Mesdames Carruthers, Whyborn and Miss Kummer. The matron needs woollen vests and jackets for children. Any person who would knit for these little ones are asked to ring Miss Kummer (1668) and wool will be provided. There is also an extra ward of children in isolation and any toys would be gladly accepted. They need not be new. Anyone who can donate toys may leave them at Dr Forsyth’s, Bannister Street. Mrs McKenzie reported on four cases visited, groceries, etc., being distributed. Mrs Pither reported goods as usual being bought and visits to the blind during July. Mrs Munn reported on a visit paid to Buchanan Home on July 14, three cars with members going to the Home. Afternoon tea, flowers and sweets were provided for all the old people. Mrs Whyborn donated a number of sleeping caps for the old men. More caps are needed, also bedsocks. Miss J. McKay delighted the inmates with her pianoaccordion playing, Mrs Olliver sang some delightful songs and Mrs Coleman was accompanist for the afternoon. Matron Higginson thanked the league for giving so much pleasure to her patients and entertained the visitors to afternoon tea.

Two new members were introduced and welcomed by the president. Mrs Kilgour read the constitution and rules for the “Home Service Association,” alstf a letter from Mrs Mitchell, Auckland. After a discussion with delegates and a number of names were submitted who were in favour of forming an association, Mrs Kilgour announced that a meeting would be arranged and those wishing to join would be notified at a future date. Miss Kummer thanked the delegates from the sister. organisation for attending the meeting. Thanks were also expressed to Mesdames Hoar, Scharnweber and Miss Bell.
