CARTERTON

LADIES’ NIGHT POSTPONED. (“Times-Age” Special.) At a special meeting'* of the committee of the Carterton Returned Soldiers’ Association branch it was decided to postpone indefinitely the Ladies Night, which had been arranged for Tuesday, August 9, as a mark of respect to the memory of the late M. S. King. Mr King was a valued member of the Carterton Branch Executive, and as a worker on behalf of the R.S.A. movement he will be sadly missed. FREE LIBRARY SERVICE. Recently a conference was held between representatives of the Borough Council, the County Council and the committee of the Public Library. Messrs Lindsay and Mitchell, of the Country Library Service, addressed the meeting and explained the working of a scheme to establish free library service in Carterton. The annual subscription is at present 10s, but if the new scheme comes into operation the library would be free to all residents, of the borough, and in certain circumstances to the residents of the county. For each town of under 2000 inhabitants, the service would supply 300 books and these would, if necessary, be changed every four months. If the county co-operated in the scheme the service would supply an extra 75 books.. It was pointed out that this would not be enough to supply all possible members. Mr Mitchell stated that it was not intended to supply the whole library, but that the Borough and the County would be expected to find the further necessary finance, approximately 2s per ratepayer. The chairman of the Library Committee, Mr W. Vaughan, asked on behalf of his committee that the councils should give the proposal close consideration, as the committee was most anxious that the library should be made free to all residents.
